February’s Featured Friend was the Wildlands Restoration Volunteers. With offices in Boulder and Fort Collins, “Wildlands Restoration Volunteers is a non-profit organization that provides an opportunity for people to come together, learn about their natural environment, and take direct action to restore and care for the land.”

With warm weather right around the corner, WRV just released their summer calendar of events. “Nearly all of WRV's 2013 projects are now posted on our Projects page. Read about

Here in Colorado we like to enjoy a frozen treat during any time of the year. Whether it’s freezing out or blistering hot, any weather condition is good enough to enjoy some frozen yogurt!

Smooch Frozen Yogurt and Mochi is a fantastic place in Boulder to serve your frozen yogurt needs! The owners Michelle and Christopher Luu opened Smooch’s doors in August 2008 as Boulder’s first frozen yogurt shop.

Michelle moved from California to Boulder in 2007. Right away, she fell in love with the food scene in Boulder. The frozen yogurt frenzy was becoming popular in California and Michelle thought she would bring it to Boulder! The couple’s goal in opening Smooch was to share their love of healthy desserts.

Both Chris and Michelle’s families own small

If you ever find yourself on Pearl Street not knowing what restaurant to eat at I would suggest going to the West End Tavern! There is great food, drinks, and a wonderful atmosphere to tend to everyone’s needs!

The West End Tavern got started 26 years ago by Minnie and Beaver, the tavern’s original owners. When it first got started, the West End Tavern was more of a bar scene. Now, it has transformed into more of a restaurant atmosphere while keeping the popular bar features.

Erin Peacock, the current general manager, gave me some insight on West End Tavern’s most popular items on the menu. The smoked and BBQ items are their most popular. I would have to agree with Erin considering the burger I had was delicious! All of their beef is local and

If you’ve never been to Tee & Cakes you may not know that the “Tee” in the name is referring to a t-shirt, not the tea you would expect to drink while eating cake. T-shirts and cakes? Odd combination, but it seems to be working for Kim and Brian!

Tee & Cakes got started 6 years ago when Kim and Brian were dating. Brian owned a business named Side B Apparel and Kim owned a business named Haute Cakes. Brian was operating his business on the side and Kim was baking cakes out of a kitchen with no retail shop. The two decided to combine their t-shirt and cake businesses and then Tee & Cakes was born!

Kim shared with me that she always had a passion for cooking. Since she was 8 years old Kim loved watching cooking shows. She worked in coffee shops and

For those of you who haven’t had a Rush Bowl, Andrew Pudalov the owner and founder, would think you are crazy.

Before we even got into the interview Andrew’s first question for me was, “Have you ever had one of our Rush Bowls?” I cautiously answered no, knowing Andrew would react in disbelief. Sure enough, Andrew gave me the priceless, stunned reaction and had a bowl made up for me right away. I tried their signature Beach Bowl and let’s just say if I ever want another smoothie or fruit bowl I know where I’m going to get one!

Learning about Andrew’s background I found that he came from a long career in finance, very diverse from what he is doing now. He lived in New York City with his wife and kids. Andrew decided to give up his finance career and

If you’ve ever heard of or been to the Unseen Bean coffee shop you probably thought it was just another average coffee hang out in Boulder. The story behind the name says it all. Gerry Leary, the owner and founder of the Unseen Bean, has surely never seen a coffee bean. Born with impaired vision, Gerry has worked through the typical struggles of being blind. Despite his vision impairment Gerry has now owned two businesses.

Meeting with Gerry and learning more about his life was a remarkable experience. Throughout the interview I became more and more impressed with what Gerry has accomplished in life. Not only does he own the Unseen Bean, he also owned a very successful auto repair shop called Gerry’s Auto Service.

Along with owning the shop Gerry

Boulder has a thriving and eclectic food scene. We can add Cuban cuisine to that scene. Local restaurant, Cuba-Cuba Sanwicheria, seems to be here for awhile. Located off of Arapahoe in The Village Shopping Center next door to Boulder Ski Deals, Cuba-Cuba serves authentic Cuban sandwiches and plates. The plates are accompanied with amazing rice and beans. I never thought much of rice and beans but Cuba-Cuba’s are damn flavorful. There are also several side dishes available.

Of course a restaurant couldn’t survive in Boulder without catering to the health conscious (or crazy), so a majority of the plates are gluten-free and a gluten-free hoagie is available for the sandwiches. They even have a designated gluten free fryer; they did they’re homework.

The folks who work and volunteer for Wildlands Restoration Volunteers aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.

In fact, they may be covered in dirt and even ash by the time their work is done on any given day.

When government funds are insufficient to improve or restore the outdoor Coloradans love, such as rerouting an unsustainable trail or putting a forest on the path back to its former glory following a wildfire, WRV comes to the rescue.

The nonprofit organization provides an opportunity for people to come together, learn about their natural environment, and take direct action to restore and care for the land.

Sarah Egolf, development coordinator for WRV, says the organization had 4,100 active volunteers between its two offices – in Boulder

For those outside of the RE/MAX of Boulder family, and for the people with our office that live under a rock, RE/MAX of Boulder recently launched an effort to support and strengthen the community we serve. The program includes a monthly “Featured Friend” campaign that highlights one of our local non-profit or local business partners. Our “Featured Friend” for January is Posh Paint and Wine Studio located at 1468 Pearl St. #120. This past Saturday evening was certainly not my first experience at The Kitchen community restaurant located in the heart of Boulder at 1039 Pearl Street, but it was as divine as my previous visits. The Kitchen is legit local cuisine as they purchase from local farmers from all around the county and state. The price reflects such a commitment to fresh and local food but it's certainly well worth it. The friends I took up company with possessed a wide variety of tastes, carnivores to pescatarians. The menu satisified all, and more. The table ranged from the delectable Colorado lamb sirloin that I chose, to a rich and robust hand rolled mushroom gnocchi. The wine was paired perfectly at the selection of our excellent waiter, Ken. The atmosphere is rustic…
