History of Lyons, Colorado
Nestled close to the mountains north of Boulder and west of Longmont, the community of Lyons was founded in 1880 by E.S. Lyon.
The Town of Lyons purchased approximately 160 acres of land, and then used it to form the Evans Townsite Company and the Lyons Rock & Lime Quarry. The railroad was brought into the small community of Lyons in 1884, and by 1891, the area had become a municipality.
Lyons was literally carved from the surrounding red sandstone mountains by the town's stone masons. Red sandstone has become a popular building material and can be seen in structures around the country. Of particular note are the sandstone buildings of the University of Colorado. The Lyons Historic District is also home to a cluster of 15 sandstone buildings.
