Featured Friend: Habitat for Humanity-agent interview with Pete Abel

RE/MAX of Boulder Agent, Pete Abel, is a very dedicated Habitat for Humanity (H4H) enthusiast.  When a friend of Pete’s turned him on to the Boulder chapter of H4H he was not familiar with the organization and what they did.  After learning more about the program, Pete signed up with H4H and became a board member for Flatirons H4H.  Since then Pete has help a position on the Flatiron H4H board and is currently the VP of operations.

His responsibility as VP is to head up financing and fundraising operations of H4H.  If you do not know, H4H helps a select group of families a year make their home owning dreams become a reality.  In order to do this, H4H asks for donations from real estate professionals, contractors, material suppliers, and government officials.  They are currently working on a project near Valmont and Foothills in Boulder on a 4 unit complex with land that was donated by the city of Boulder.  The end product will house four carefully evaluated and selected families to buy the home.

The families selected go through a rigorous selection process and when H4H makes their decision the families commitment doesn’t end there.  In order to be a H4H family, they must put in almost 300hours of construction on their home and attend homeowner classes to educate them on how to take care and maintain their new home.  This action creates more proud homeowners; instead of just giving a home to a family, they have to put in the sweat equity and earn it.

Of course, it does take more than one family and 300 hours to build a home.  That’s why Pete Abel volunteers as the VP of financing and fundraising.  His job is to recruit outside resources to help make the project a success.  May it be putting together a ‘build day’ with local volunteers to do physical work on the house, ask for material donations from businesses like Home Depot, or spread the word around the Boulder community for monetary donations.

“We are funded by individual donors. From People that want to help and make a difference, we always need support from the community and town.”
