Have you ever longed to retire in a luxury condo next to the azure waters of Cabo San Lucas or Playa del Carmen? Or thought of buying a vacation home in Mexico, or even considered moving there for work? It might seem daunting to purchase real estate across the border. In fact, this is precisely what Mexican visitors, who vacation in Vail and Aspen or want to relocate to Colorado for work, might be thinking, too.
The link between Colorado and Mexico is a strong one. Mexico is Colorado’s second-largest export market and travel between Colorado and Mexico is increasing. It’s no wonder that Coloradans visiting Mexico, and rising numbers of Mexicans visiting Colorado, are experiencing appealing lifestyles abroad and may want to purchase real estate.
This is where RE/MAX of Boulder Realtor Chip Bruss lends his international real estate expertise. Fresh from Playa del Carmen, Chip took part in an in-depth series of classes there for the Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) certification, held by National Association of Realtors. This furnished him with the knowledge to facilitate international real estate transactions – both for Coloradans looking to purchase real estate in Mexico and Mexicans interested in buying in Colorado. “As the only American in the class, I was fully immersed in both the culture and business practices of Mexico,” comments Chip. “And, I was impressed with the level of experience, knowledge, and educational backgrounds of my Mexican colleagues including a lawyer, accountant, architect, and CFO.”
Working internationally is at the core of Chip’s values and life story. At the age of 13, Chip and his three brothers were pulled out of school by their parents and had the rare opportunity to take an eye-opening, yearlong journey around the world, which started and ended in Hawaii. This sparked Chip’s love of travel, local cultures, and making connections with people from other countries. Having lived in Portugal, Hawaii, and Japan, he now has his eyes set on Mexico where he says, “I see a huge opportunity to connect buyers and sellers with real estate opportunities in both Mexico and Colorado.”
More and more expats are moving to Latin American countries for the sunny weather and the affordable cost of living. “Last year I attended the International Living Conference in Mexico City”, recounts Chip. “The purpose of the event was to provide expats with solid information about living in Mexico, whether full time or part time.” While there, he was introduced to local developer Tao Mexico, which organizes discovery tours for Americans and Canadians interested in purchasing real estate along the Rivera Maya coastline. “It was more than a discovery for me, it was more like an epiphany, seeing all these expats investing in Mexican real estate.”
Likewise, according to the Colorado Tourism Office, there has been a 60% growth in numbers of Mexican tourists visiting Colorado from 2012 to 2017 and the National Association of Realtors found that most foreign buyers of Colorado real estate are from Mexico (and Canada). Colorado has become an international destination, whether for vacationing in stunning mountain getaways, or for employment opportunities. “I’ve helped numerous international employees relocate to the Broomfield and Boulder area in the last couple years, so many in fact, that it inspired me to take classes for my CIPS certificate.”
